Working with wood has been both a career and a passion for me. I was fortunate to have a secondary school woodwork teacher who introduced me to the beauty of wood and the joy and precision in working it. Retirement allows me to indulge my continuing love affair with wood. Turning is an opportunity to create useful and beautiful articles from a raw material which always holds surprises. In some cases ‘opening up’ a piece of wood on a lathe reveals a weakness or fault causing an almost complete article to fly apart. At other times an unexpectedly beautiful figure and colour is revealed which enhances the original design concept and the final article. In both cases there is great excitement for the turner, in the former case the frustration of a beautiful article destroyed, in the latter, an opportunity to share with others the unexpected beauty which enhances the created shape. |
