Muriel Birkill
Muriel grew up in Adelaide, the eldest of eight children, with a very creative mother who inspired her to try new crafts and passed on many of her artistic talents. When she married she moved around South Australia with her husband picking up new and interesting hobbies. Gem Stones and jewellery making and running the family vineyard were the highlights. Muriel always loved glass, the colours and feel of beautiful pieces fascinated her, but she never thought she would be able to work with glass, shiny and hard when cold, completely transformed when hot and molten. Upon retirement Muriel, inspired by a friend and looking for something new and different discovered the magic of working with glass. Muriel started by joining a workshop run by Cindy Durant a glass artist from Fowlers Bay in S.A. and has since participated in workshops run by Patty Gray from U.S.A. and Kathleen from W.A. Her inspiration comes from colours, forms and shapes around her. Glass offers so many options and today she still has many techniques to experiment with. |
